Recently, the Dispute Resolution Service Provider FORUM, circulated a newsletter providing us with updates on domain dispute resolution matters.
According to the newsletter, the number of domain name disputes filed with FORUM has risen each year since 2016, and has increased dramatically since 2019, with 51% growth between 2019 and 2023.
A breakdown of the cases filed by case type for 2023, compared to 2022 is as follows:
· UDRP (including ccTLD cases adopting the UDRP) – 2,677 (3% increase)
· URS – 177 (22% increase)
· USDRP – 94 (32% increase)
· CDRP – 40 (5% increase)
In the newsletter, FORUM claims that the average time for the case duration, starting from case commencement to issuing a UDRP decision, has been 31 days. The average for URS cases were 20 days.
In further information, an estimated 431.8 million domain names were registered in 2022 alone. Therefore the likelihood of increase in domain dispute cases is bound to happen in the coming times, and is an important area of practice for lawyers to explore.
